FAQ’s
How much do Kachelofens (tile stoves) cost?
The cost of a Kachelofen ranges from about € 6,000 for a small tiled stove to about € 20,000 for a whole-house heating system.
What is the difference between the traditional Kachelofens, which are large and heavy, and a small Kachelofen?
The small Kachelofen offers everything which its big brother can also do. However, its heat output is specifically adapted to the lower energy requirements of apartments or very well insulated spaces. It is also smaller and quick to assemble or dismantle.
If a Kachelofen is to become part of my living environment, what design options will I have?
The design possibilities are almost endless with a tiled stove. Because it is a highly individual product, the stove builder can customise it to fulfil a customer’s every wish. The range includes classical and traditional designs, right up to extremely modern. Colours, shapes and proportions can be chosen freely.
Do Kachelofens require a high degree of maintenance?
Maintenance costs for a Kachelofen are comparatively low. For a Kachelofen which is in regular use, experts recommend having it serviced every three years by the stove builder.
Particle emissions are a controversial issue. Do tiled stoves not have emissions of this sort, too?
Modern tiled stoves are notable for their optimum combustion quality and energy efficiency. These properties are individually calculated using a computer program and adapted to the specific situation of the customer. As a result, the volumes of gas and dust emissions produced are extremely low.
How long will it take before a tiled stove is installed and ready to use?
Fitting a tiled stove takes from 2 days (for a small tiled stove) to a maximum of two weeks in the case of a whole-house heating system. Typical tiled stoves are built in about a week. You can then begin straight away with heating the tiled stove to dry it out.
What requirements must a house or apartment meet in order to be able to operate a tiled stove?
One particularly important requirement is that there must be a chimney in the property. Chimneys with a diameter of 16 to 20 cm are ideal here. For this reason, it is recommended that you contact the stove-fitter as early on in the planning stage as possible.
What problems will I have with ash and soot?
Modern tiled stoves generate virtually no soot. The wood ashes remaining in the stove combustion chamber are removed from the stove via the filling door, and this will need to be done once or more every heating season, depending on how much the stove is used.
How much does wood cost and what can I expect the overall costs to be for a heating season?
The price of wood has barely changed in recent decades, and a cubic metre of dried hardwood would cost around € 70 today, for example. Typical users of tiled stoves can expect heating costs of around € 200 for the heating season. Naturally this is an average figure, because as with any other heating system these costs depend on the size of the rooms, the size of the house, the thermal insulation and the intensity of the heat.
How much wood does a tiled stove require and how often must more wood be added?
The amount of wood needed depends on the heat output of the tiled stove. Typical amounts of wood are between 8 and 15 kg, to be added to the stove once or at most twice per day.
